Coming to Theatres February 29, 2008
by
The releases of February 22 had a little bit of everything to offer: Action, drama, horror and comedy. After that particular mix, February 29, at first glance, appears bland. We get six new movies, but four of those are limited releases meaning they might not show up in a theatre near you. Do not despair, however because Will Ferrell’s new movie, Semi-Pro, opens this coming Friday thus ensuring it is once again safe to enter your local cinema.

Semi-Pro
Before the actual trailer was released, we were treated to this teaser and it was all I needed to see to ensure my butt would be in the seat come February 29.
Not counting Stranger Than Fiction in which Ferrell turned in a believable dramatic performance, I run hot and cold on his body of work. For every Elf there is a Kicking and Screaming, and for every Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby there is a Blades of Glory. I’m hoping though Semi-Pro is more Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy than A Night at the Roxbury.
Dane Cook Coming to

Reported by Mike Gagnon
If you’ve been watching movies lately, you know that Dane Cook has been making waves as an actor. Cook has proven that he has range, starring in slacker comedies like “Employee of the Month” with Jessica Simpson, to darker roles such as a wanna-be serial killer with Kevin Costner in “Mr. Brooks”.
Before Cook jumped to the big screen he got his attention by being one of the youngest, raunchiest, most energetic stand-up comedians of the decade.

Let’s face it. While it is an increasingly common factor to meet a girl who enjoys playing a video game every year or so, you want more. You want to convince your girlfriend, friend that’s a girl, cousin, classmate, sister, whatever, to play video games more often then once every half a decade. How do you do it?
Start ‘em young
The younger they are, the easier it is to con them into playing. While it is unlikely that you are dating a middle schooler, that is the opportune time to stick a controller in their hands before they discover it is ‘uncool’ for a girl to play video games. But don’t worry, there’s still hope if they are older. However, don’t marry a girl and hope that by the time she’s 43 you’ll be able to talk her into playing Halo. Start as soon as possible, before they start getting logical and complain about how much money new systems, games, and gadgets cost.

She’s known for having one of the best bodies in the business. Supermodel, Gisele Bundchen dominates the runway with her long, legs and long, slim build. Gisele is obviously blessed with good genetics and youth, but how much of her enviable body is related to good diet and exercise habits? Are there Giselle Bundchen diet secrets you need to know? Let’s find out:
Giselle Bundchen diet secret: Cheeseburgers
Interestingly enough, Giselle was “discovered” in her early teens by a talent scout who spotted her in a McDonald’s fast food restaurant. Most likely, she was eating one of her favorite foods, a cheeseburger. Giselle admits to a fondness for cheeseburgers which eats on a rather frequent basis.

Hayden Panettiere doesn’t just act like a hero; she’s trying to be one. The actress, who plays a cheerleader on the hit NBC show, Heroes, is a spokeswoman for the Save The Whales Again organization. She recently spoke at an environmental summit in Washington D.C. But Panettiere made the biggest splash, by risking her own safety during a protest. That gives new meaning to her TV show’s slogan, “Save the Cheerleader, Save the World.”
The dangerous protest happened in October, in Japan. According to the Save The Whales Again website, Panettiere and a few other protestors paddled out on surfboards toward pilot whales, trapped in a netted enclosure off the town of Taiji. The website says Panettiere and other activists went through water that was red with blood, and gathered in a circle “to honor the spirits of the over 25,000 dolphins killed each year in Japan.”
Hey all, I have already requested to take part in the event listed below, I encourage anyone out there interested to take part if they can. Although I doubt I’d be able to attend in person, I will be doing a number of Sketch cards.
In all seriousness it’s not often enough that we get a chance to help out in our own way. Even if you can’t make time in your busy schedule to take part, I encourage you to pass this on to any friends or associates who may.
Thanks,
Mike Gagnon
Blue Line is sponsoring a Sketch Card Gallery Exhibit on March 8, 2008 at Comics2Games in Florence, Kentucky. This show is open to all artists. Blue Line will send sketch cards for the artist to do their illustrations and Comics2Games will set up the display for the event. The Exhibit will be up all day with a get-together with some of the artists from 5 to 8pm that evening. Then, after the show, the cards will be auctioned on eBay with the proceeds donated to the American Cancer Society.
Cancer has touched the lives and families of so many artists and writers, faced with fighting this terrible disease. So, consider taking the time to illustrate a few cards for a good cause. Blue Line is supplying the sketch cards for the show and will mail blank cards to artists upon request to illustrate for this event.
The cards can feature most any characters (including your own) with some exceptions on licensed properties such as Star Wars.
For more information to contact Comics2Games at (859) 647-7568 you can contact Jeremy Bell at jeremyb@comics2cars.com on how you or an artist you know can participate in the event for this worthy cause!
Pass the word along to all the message boards, groups, bulletin boards and other outlets you know. Help the fight against cancer and participate in this sketch card event!
Review: Jokes and the Unconscious
By Daphne Gottlieb and Diane DiMassa
Cleis Press, $17.95
reviewed by Matthue Roth

Jokes and the Unconscious, the first collaboration between slam poet and author Daphne Gottlieb and cartoonist Diane DiMassa, is a graphic novel, but not in the sense of the term that we’re familiar with. It’s less a story with two roles (writer and artist) than it is a series of free-form riffs—between the story being told and the storyteller’s reaction to it, flashbacks and alternate realities and entire sections of “Oh yeah, this reminds me of a joke…”
That’s just the text. The additional layer of the illustrations feels like another riff, another interpretation and another level removed, as hand-lettered paragraphs scroll and fade into speech-bubbled conversations, etchings, or into those sequential-art panels that we know and love.
Review: Legion of Monsters: Man-Thing #1
reviewed by Daniel Peretti

With the relatively recent revival of Marvel Monsters, two faces of monsters have been revealed. One face showed itself in the Monsters on the Prowl series of loosely connected one-shots a few years ago. These were entertaining, with better art than stories most of the time. Though these were labeled monster stories, they were more or less super-hero adventure stories with monstrous heroes and villains. The stories were more aptly characterized as thrilling, not chilling.
