Coming to Theatres February 29, 2008

The releases of February 22 had a little bit of everything to offer: Action, drama, horror and comedy. After that particular mix, February 29, at first glance, appears bland. We get six new movies, but four of those are limited releases meaning they might not show up in a theatre near you. Do not despair, however because Will Ferrell’s new movie, Semi-Pro, opens this coming Friday thus ensuring it is once again safe to enter your local cinema.

Before the actual trailer was released, we were treated to this teaser and it was all I needed to see to ensure my butt would be in the seat come February 29.  

Not counting Stranger Than Fiction in which Ferrell turned in a believable dramatic performance, I run hot and cold on his body of work. For every Elf there is a Kicking and Screaming, and for every Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby there is a Blades of Glory. I’m hoping though Semi-Pro is more Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy than A Night at the Roxbury.

Movie Watch

Coming to Theatres February 22, 2008

In my February 15 installment of Movie Watch, I said the latter half of February was going to be a lot stronger than the first half of the month. I’m true to my word. Three of the four movies hitting theatres on February 22 are going to be worth a look. Let’s take a gander…

Vantage Point

 

Eight people witness the apparent assassination of the President of the United States. If you’ve seen the trailer you know there is a lot of mystery surrounding this assassination, including the fact the “real” President wasn’t even at the event at which he was assassinated. The mysteries are then revealed through the re-telling of the same event from the perspective of each of the eight witnesses, each point of view told in fifteen minutes.

Valentine's Movie Watch!

Coming to Theatres February 15, 2008

There are not a lot of new releases coming to theaters on February 15, which is disheartening considering the batch of deadbeats that were released the previous week. To frustrate the mature moviegoer further, three of the four mainstream films being released are for a younger audience. Looks like I’ll be relying on zip.ca to provide my motion picture fix once again.

 

Definitely, Maybe

Over Her Dead Body released on February 1 was a date movie to avoid. Last week I recommended Fool’s Gold as a potential date movie, one that would deliver relationship comedy and cutes plus a dose of female friendly action. February 15 has the release of yet another date movie, and while it doesn’t have the action of Fool’s Gold it does promise to have better comedy and relationship drama than Over Her Dead Body.

Movie Watch

Coming to Theatres February 8, 2008

If you thought the week of February 1 was lean just wait until you get a load of the sludge being shipped into theatres for the week of the 8^th. With the exception of three potential limited release gems, the week is weak. You’re better off hitting the local video store and renting some of the films released on February 5, including Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Across the Universe and The Brave One.

Wild West Comedy Show: 30 Days & 30 Nights – Hollywood to the Heartland

In 2005, Vince Vaughn handpicked four stand-up comedians and took them on a 6,000 mile journey to perform 30 shows in 30 consecutive nights in cities across America. The documentary hitting theatres February 8 follows that journey.

Movie Watch

Coming to Theatres February 1, 2008

January and February are a tough time at the movie theatre. Hollywood has just unloaded their best of the best at the end of the year, which is primetime for Oscar hopefuls, and it’s far too early to release the big blockbuster events that reign supreme over the May long weekend and summer months. As such, January and February in particular are a dumping ground for riskier genre films (see January’s Cloverfield) and movies that would most likely not draw any sort of audience if they were released against the stiffer competition of summer, fall and winter. On the positive side, the first quarter of the year sometimes sees the release of a sleeper hit, a movie that slowly builds a following through consistent positive word of mouth. Let’s then take a look at what the first week in February has to offer.

Dane Cook Coming to London, Ontario?

If you’ve been watching movies lately, you know that Dane Cook has been making waves as an actor. Cook has proven that he has range, starring in slacker comedies like “Employee of the Month” with Jessica Simpson, to darker roles such as a wanna-be serial killer with Kevin Costner in “Mr. Brooks”.

 

Before Cook jumped to the big screen he got his attention by being one of the youngest, raunchiest, most energetic stand-up comedians of the decade.

A man and a woman who'd never met before, and were both married to other people, found themselves accidentally assigned to the same sleeping room on a transcontinental train. There were no other available rooms.

Even though they were embarrassed and uneasy over sharing a room,they were both extremely tired, and decided it would have to do.

They each both took a bunk, he in the upper and she in the lower, and fell asleep quickly.

At 1:00am, the man leaned over and gently woke the woman saying, "Ma'am, I'm sorry to bother you, but would you be willing to reach into the closet to get me a second blanket? It's awfully cold in here."

"I'm cold too, and I have a better idea," she replied. "Just for tonight, let's pretend that we're married."

"Wow! That's a great idea!" he exclaimed.

"Good," she replied. "Get your own f------ blanket!"

After a moment of silence, he farted.

Colbert for President!

As a Canadian citizen who has no voting rights in the U.S., no vested interests in the outcome of the '08 Presedential Election, and will have very little concerns to deal with over the results of said election, I fully endorse the newly announced campaign of Colbert Report anchor Stephen Colbert. I encourage all U.S. citizens to vote Colbert! If for some insane reason you can't vote for Colbert, like if your hands have been severed, or you are in fact a very intelligent and vote conscious grizzly bear, then at least consider voting for Hilary. After nearly a decade of George W. Bush I do indeed miss the entertaining antics of one Bill Clinton.

Confusions of an Unmarried Couple

Genre: Comedy/Romance/Drama

 

Meet Dan and Lisa, your average modern unmarried couple. Well, not really anymore.

 

Dan’s spent months living on his brother’s couch after walking out on Lisa without saying a word. Dan departed from the couple’s home after walking in on Lisa having a steamy lesbian encounter and walked straight over to his brother’s place. During the time at his brother’s Dan has eked out a life of depression, petty revenge, alcoholism and obsession, all the while having his deepest thoughts and feelings recorded by his brother for posterity. Dan’s brother also interviews Lisa about her thoughts and feelings on the relationship, and these insightful and realistically hilarious clips are often fed to the viewer throughout the movie.

 

At the onset of the story Dan decides to, in his own words, “settle the score”. In reality he returns to the place he once called home and confronts Lisa, who is torn between her guilt for what happened, and her resentment towards Dan for not fighting for her.

 

While the drama unfolds Dan carries out his plan to regain his most important items left behind in the apartment whenever Lisa isn’t looking, all the while pretending to be there in an attempt to reconcile their problems.

 

The heated back and forth debate between the lead characters soon leads to a number of explosive revelations and confessions.

 

Confusions of an Unmarried Couple is at its heart a believable and heartfelt tale that could be taken from the relationship of any random person, all the while still maintaining an admirable level of clever humor, often at the expense of the delicate male psyche.

 

Although not everyone has walked in on their girlfriend chowing down on another lady, anyone who’s been in a relationship can relate to and enjoy this story. Well worth the 74 minutes of your time.

When Dave decides that it is time to confront her about her cheating and break it off, Jill flies into a dramatic rage that he has the nerve to stand up to her over her “indiscretions”.
