Hayden Panettiere doesn’t just act like a hero; she’s trying to be one. The actress, who plays a cheerleader on the hit NBC show, Heroes, is a spokeswoman for the Save The Whales Again organization. She recently spoke at an environmental summit in Washington D.C. But Panettiere made the biggest splash, by risking her own safety during a protest. That gives new meaning to her TV show’s slogan, “Save the Cheerleader, Save the World.”
The dangerous protest happened in October, in Japan. According to the Save The Whales Again website, Panettiere and a few other protestors paddled out on surfboards toward pilot whales, trapped in a netted enclosure off the town of Taiji. The website says Panettiere and other activists went through water that was red with blood, and gathered in a circle “to honor the spirits of the over 25,000 dolphins killed each year in Japan.”
