Submit news to SCRR!

Sex, Comics and Rock’n’Roll Submission Guidelines

Sex, Comics and Rock’n’Roll does accept submissions of press releases, articles, reviews, news and interesting material relating to modern pop culture.

Each submission is individually reviewed by the website administrator. Publishing submissions on the website is at the sole discretion of the administrator. Submission of material does not guarantee that it will be published. Realistically we get more submissions than we can publish. Sometimes an item being rejected isn’t a sign that your piece isn’t good enough, just that we didn’t have room for it at that time.

The administration of Sex, Comics and Rock’n’Roll reserves the right to edit or return a submission with suggested editorial revisions attached prior to publishing or agreeing to publish.

Rights: Sex, Comics and Rock’n’Roll asks only for one-time electronic publishing rights. We will accept submissions of previously published material and reprints as long as you are the legal rights holder of the material and one-time electronic rights are available. You retain all legal ownership and copyright to your work. We never own any copyrights or ownership to your content.

Qualifying articles: In order for an article, press release or review to qualify to even be considered for posting it must meet certain criteria. The focus of the submission must directly relate to the topics of sex/sexuality/relationships, comic books or rock music OR it must relate to at least two of the other categories listed in the archive listing on the right side of the website.

Example: If an article does not relate to sex, comics or rock’n’roll, but it does relate to entertainment and movies, then we can consider it for publication.

The list of categories is always growing so check it often.

When submitting material, be sure to include some suggestions of which categories you feel your submission fits into.

Accuracy: It is important to ensure that any articles you write are well researched and fact checked. The website administration will also research and fact check your article prior to posting. If we find it to be inaccurate it will not be posted. Writer’s who chronically submit inaccurate information will no longer be considered welcome to submit material.

Plagiarism or suspected plagiarism will also result in having any future submissions barred.

Be prepared to write revisions. Nobody ever submits and article that doesn't need some polishing and re-writing, don't submit expecteing to be the first. Instead submit material and be prepared to recieve a list of editorial notes, changes etc. if it is accepted.

Pay: At this time Sex, Comics and Rock’n’Roll does not pay cash for press releases, solicitation notices, tour schedules, or any othertype of self-promotinal article. We no longer publish solicitations. We do now however offer payment starting at 1 cent per word to freelancers for unbiased articles, reviews and content. All writers start at 1 cent per word and can negotiate raises based on quality or work, performance, experience, and tenure with the website. What you also get in return is exposure for your work, a source for published clippings to add to your portfolio, and a positive work reference to use towards the building of your freelance writing career.

Writers may also request a link be placed to their website in the byline of their article. Site administrators reserve the right to accept or deny this request based on the nature of the website.

Images: We encourage you to submit or provide images with your submissions. You must own the copyright to any images submitted, have written permission to use them, or be able to display fair use in the interests of journalistic review.

Image specs should be:

PC format jpg., max. 100 dpi resolution, max. size 300 pixels wide.

Press Releases: Unlike other submissions press releases will not be edited by staff, but posted verbatim as received. We will however fact check material. Press releases should not exceed one page. Press releases that far exceed this limit may be posted with material cut out or not posted at all. We do not pay for press releases.

Recently SCRNR changed its policies to allow press releases that contain long tour date listings. We reserve the right to publish these at our discretion and may decide to only publish them in the tours category of the website.

Please make sure that any website that readers are directed to in your press release is up-to-date, working, and contains current information. We will check and if we find it to be lacking may decide not to post your press release.

Any press releases making legal claims or possible defamatory statements will be thoroughly fact checked and may be posted with a disclaimer from the website or not posted at all.

Articles: Articles should always easily relate to the topics listed in Sex, Comics and Rock’n’Roll’s archives. They should not be overtly or blatantly selling anything or sponsored by the subject of the article in any way. They should be accurate, thorough, fact checked, and even more importantly spell checked. Articles should not exceed 1,000 words.

Remember to include your byline under the title and any page link requests you might have.

Please remember that this is a pop culture news site. There are plenty of good writers covering world politics and plenty of other venues for that type of material; this however is not one of them.

Reviews: Reviews should focus tightly on a given subject, such as a comic book, CD, performance, book, movie, TV show, etc. Reviews should convey the opinion of the writer in an intelligent and concise manner.

We are not interested in long sprawling reviews and play-by-play criticisms; the internet does not lend itself well to that type of article. A good rule of thumb I like to use is that if someone could read the book or watch the movie in less time than it takes to read your review on it, they would have been better off to just watch the movie or read the book.

With this in mind we ask that reviews be kept to approximately 1000 words or less.

Generally we also try to prevent revealing endings of movies and books for people who may not have enjoyed them yet. If you feel that revealing the ending or other key elements of the plot are necessary to complete your review please be sure to include a “spoiler alert” beneath your title and byline.

Please note that we generally do not look for writers who are a source of reviews of poorly made movies, books, comics, etc. If you’ve seen a surprisingly bad film and just have to write a review about it that’s fine, but we don’t want to hear about every bad film you’ve seen. We try not to give exposure to projects that don’t deserve it. We’d rather acknowledge the good stuff out there and dismiss the rest. If you hate everything you watch or read we’re likely not the venue to get your reviews published.

How to submit: Submissions can be sent via e-mail. Images should be sent as a file attachment. Finished articles, reviews and press releases can be pasted into the body of the e-mail, or attached as MS Word files. Be sure to also include images. E-mail the submission to Editor Mike Gagnon at editor@sexcomicsandrocknroll.com
